A website should be fun

An engaging website ensures longer visits, and loyal followers. Look at zoopedup as an example :

"Zoopedup is an automotive social network that allows you to create an online garage for your car featuring
blogging, video and picture sharing, discussion forums, ride battles and event galleries from around the globe."

Now, this is quite a niche social networking idea, but it works. According to zoopedup's stats the average user spends almost 30 minutes on the site on every visit.
After looking at the site for some time I established what makes it different than other social media sites: it's fun, engaging and competitive. The main ingredient is definitely fun. It's almost a case of mafia wars meets facebook profile, where you have to build up your own profile, gain respect and become a mafia don.

Flickr also has a fun outlook on their website and they try to keep it as simple and user friendly as possible. After browsing through some photos I saw a bar at the top of the screen with the title "The new Flickr photo page. Bigger. Faster. More Flickr-er". I wouldn't normally click on something like this but just because it's Flickr i decided to try it out. I was utterly impressed by the way Flickr presented their new features. If you scroll over a feature with your mouse a real time text box appears on the current page explaining the function the feature fulfills and why it would be beneficial to you, the user.

Point number five didn't have a heading so I quickly scrolled over to see what it could be... out popped a panda and a message encouraging you to have fun!

I really enjoyed it and I give full marks for the Flickr team for introducing their new features in such an easy way.

Insipration: The bold italic

The Bold Italic is an experiment in local discovery based in the beautiful city of San Francisco. The mission of the site is to help people become better locals, equipping our members with rare local intel, backstory and potential adventures. The writers, better known as the Bold Locals, scout everything from the libraries to the surf to bring you the best in backstories of distinctive, offbeat local experiences. I really like the whole concept of the Bold Italic website but more so the design.

The Bold Italic website is eye catching and has a print-design feel to it. The design combined with the snappy content makes it stand out from other blog-format sites. So be bold and click on over to the Bold Italic side of the web.

The below images are snaps from some of the beautiful design that can be associated with the Bold Italic. (click for a larger view)

aerial perspective : atlantic seaboard, cape town

Recently on a fresh morning I had the opportunity to go on a helicopter flip over Cape Town to do some filming. I took my Canon G11 along to get some still shots. It was a perfect day with no clouds, a few early sun rays and no wind except for the helicopter's blades. I live in Cape Town and I've seen all the sights a hundred times but the aerial view just made me appreciate everything a bit more. From the sky you can see Cape Town come to life: the trains creeping out of the station, the worm of cars on the N2, the mountain shaking of the morning dew and the ocean shimmering to the touch of the frisky sun. That was enough poetry for a couple of days (thank you Jay-Z)!

inspiration: error pages

I'm currently working on a social media campaign for a big company. Naturally I'm going to set up a twitter account, because you know...everybody from Shrek's body double to your Grandma's lapdog is on it. So there i was: mixing and matching colours and background images until this beautiful glossy whale halted my process! That made me realize how important a nice error message is. Usually i would have been supremely annoyed when i encounter a message like this but that smiling shiny flying whale actually brightened up my day. Well done twitter.

Here are some more clever error messages. Enjoy.

a website: make nice

I believe the most creative people in the world are illustrators. They have the ability to make the most outrageous dreams visible by a couple of pens and a piece of paper. Emma Cook's dreams are like a bowl of rum and raisin ice cream, with extra M&M's, syrup, Oreo's, basil pesto...and some Marmite! it might sound like a unusual blend of ingredients, but have you tried it? I bet not!

Emma graduated from Vega School of Brand Communications with a BA in Visual Communication, specialising in graphic design. She was top of her class and was given a oversized pencil as a reward. She used the pencil to draw on the back of her degree and now it is blunt and cannot be sharpened.

Lamenting the death of her giant pencil, Emma fled to Cape Town where she lied her way into Am I Collective by assuring them that she made great coffee. Thankfully there was a coffee machine and her lie was never detected, which allowed her to hang out there for the next 3 years. While there she worked on brands from all across the globe. From UK to San Francisco, from Milan to Paris, from Joburg to Cape Town. From Nike to SA Dairy board, from HP to Mini, from Halifax to Cape Union Mart.

Now, though, Emma is hitting the freelance world. And looking forward to working with a new interesting mix of people. LIKE YOU!

Mouille Point, Cape Town. From dusk till dawn

The following photos has been taken in the Mouille Point area in Cape Town. Mouille Point is a small strip of apartment buildings situated along the Atlantic Seaboard. Apart from the stunning views the area has recently become even more exclusive with the addition of the Green Point football stadium and an upgraded gold course. I love living here.
